A pastime of designing & making wall lights for Industrial Designer, Ian Munro, became serious when he was commissioned to design and supply wall lights for the Heritage Square development in Cape Town.
LUMEN 8 came into being in 1998 and was supplying wall lights to various light shops in Cape Town. It soon became apparent that equally attractive light switches and plugs were needed to complement the light fittings.
This led to our first range of round stainless steel cover plates with chrome toggle levers light switches. After outgrowing our space at The Palms in Woodstock we settled into our Paarden Eiland premises in Cape Town. Demand for our niche switch-gear out-grew the lights at such a pace that bespoke switch-gear became our main speciality.
Our bespoke switches and sockets were so different in quality and style to the existing run-of-the-mill products that we felt the need to coin a better word to set us apart from the mass produced economy offerings available. The word we settled on was “SWITCH-GEAR”. The term implied quality and an element of trendiness.
Cape Town is our production, administrative and sales headquarters. In Johannesburg we have an additional showroom and sales office.

Our process is to consult, specify, quote and manufacture. Due to our unique bespoke offering, a required amount of time is necessary for manufacture, much like a fine dining restaurant requiring time to produce your sumptuous meal.
